Our
site is proud to announce that all visitors are now welcomed to participate in
an E-mail List focused exclusively on keeping African Rift Lake Cichlids. In
this page you will find the very simple steps you have to follow in order to
become a member and the basic rules that we would like all of you to follow in
order to make this list work better. How
to subscribe? Simply click on the icon at the bottom of the page. As easy as
that. All you have to do then is to follow the instructions on your
screen. If you
have any good quality photos, please send them to the list with a note that you
would like to consider them for addition in this site. Full credit will be given
to all submissions. Photos may be added in a particular species description
article (if available), used in one when it becomes available or presented in
the "Photo
Gallery" section of this site. If we receive enough
photos from a particular List member, we will consider dedicating a whole page
for his work with a short profile (in agreement with him / her). Your
attachments should be less than 60KB (100KB at most). You will be privately
asked to send in the full - sized archive for publication so you can just send a
"thumbnail" to the list or directly to us (E-mail at the bottom of
every page). We
would like to see people all over the world participating in this list. The
language of this list is English. However, because of the diversity of the
Authors, we would be glad to help visitors in Italian, Belgian and Greek. Your
postings will be translated in English for the rest of the List members, however
you will have to accept their answers / comments in English. There is a panel of
experts on this field who will answer / clarify matters which belong to their
specialty. It has been agreed that only "complicated" issues will be
forwarded to them - respecting their truly limited time. There
is no "entry level" in this list. As long as you keep Africans and you
want to share and learn, you are eligible to become a member. Needless to
say, participation is free of any charge. We
hope that this list will soon become big enough thus helping all of us to become
better aquarists. RULES
- LIST POLICY For
those of you who are new members or any of you who may have forgotten where you
are at, this list is for the purpose of gathering people together who have an
interest in African Cichlids. This, of course, would be defined as rift
lake species.
While the upkeep varies greatly between these groups, not being from a rift lake
does not exclude a particular cichlid from being discussed on this list. The
use of scientific names (e.g. Cyrtocara moorii) is highly encouraged
since this is the only way to get or give accurate information. Common names,
especially "descriptive ones" (e.g. Red shoulder peacock or Malawi
dolphin) should be
avoided.
On this list you will receive a compilation of knowledge from
our more experienced members as well as those just beginning to learn, different
ideas for the upkeep of various Africans, and have the opportunity to have your
questions answered in regard to keeping, breeding and nurturing your African
Cichlids. For all the newbies and lurkers, please feel free to join a
conversation, create a new one, or ask questions of your own at any time.
Basically, this list has very few rules. Our only
concern is keeping harmony on the list and avoiding unnecessary postings (ones
that do not pertain to keeping Africans) and avoiding general uncouth behavior
that may upset other members.
SPAM
-- For this list SPAM is defined as joining the list for the specific purpose of
free advertisement for your product, business, or another list, whether it
pertains to the subject or not. This is unacceptable, and equivalent to
telemarketing. This does apply to those who join to let members know that
you also have an African cichlid list...if you have a list such as the one we
are already on and want to beef up your membership, please do that privately.
We have worked very hard to make this list available to the public and it is
extremely rude to attempt to poach our members.
Please refrain from responding to these posts on list,
I assure you the matter will be handled privately by the authors or a person
responsible for these matters. If you wish to slam the perpetrator feel
free to do so off list, in fact it is encouraged. Also, normally, spammers
will post their advertisement and immediately unsubscribe, so they will not be
able to witness your expressions of outrage, therefore making it a wasted
effort. When spamming occurs the authors will contact the person off list.
If ignored and the spamming continues, the person will be unsubscribed.
COMMERCIAL
POSTING AND ADVERTISEMENTS -- Definitely not allowed at all.
MCH has been - and will continue to be - the podium of the hobbyist. Only update
notifications of personal or non commercial "fishy" sites is allowed -
in fact encouraged.
ALTERCATIONS --
This is NOT the same as disagreement, which is entirely acceptable. We
have a lot of people here and there will be times you will disagree and that is
normal and encouraged. That is one way we learn from each other.
But, please refrain from name calling and comments that do not contribute to the
issue at hand. If your posts must degenerate in that direction, please
take it off list. I realize fights are more fun with an audience, but most
of us don't wish to witness them.
If an altercation that turns ugly does occur, the authors will
handle it off list. It is unnecessary for other members to jump in and
complain about the fighting, this only adds fuel to the flame. If you must
complain to the offending members please do it off list. Flaming other
members on list will not be tolerated. Also, realize that the authors are
not psychic and cannot stop things from getting out of hand before it starts,
but once things go in that direction it will be dealt with privately.
UNSUBSCRIBING --
If you wish to unsubscribe just send an E-mail to eastafricancichlids-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com
If a request to unsubscribe does manage to find its way to the list, the authors
will handle it within 24 hours. Subscribing again to the list is only possible
one month after the last unsubscription. Thus, we will avoid members jumping in
and out of the list.
There has been some concern dealing with the fact that the authors
/ moderators have the power to unsubscribe. This is a power given to all
moderators of an egroup list, and we assure you it will not be abused. No
one will be unsubscribed unwillingly without a warning. In the
normal course of things this power will only be used to unsubscribe those
wishing to be unsubscribed, or for a new member who has invaded the list for the
purpose of being a "troll". In any case, if there have been
repeated violation of any of the rules listed in this page, the authors will
unsubscribe the violating member the soonest possible.
CONTACTS
