Farewell to Dale Pautler

On October 8, 2000, Stacey Pautler, Dale’s daughter posted the following message to our African Cichlid Group. To us, the authors of MCH, this was just shocking news.

This is to inform you that on the evening of October 4, 2000 my father Dale Pautler passed away.  While in his sleep he suffered a coronary heart attack which caused him never to awaken again.  There was no pain or suffering involved with this attack.  He was not ill prior to this so his untimely death has taken my mother, my brother and myself by total surprise.  We will be holding his funeral at Westmount Funeral Home in
Kitchener on Tuesday October 10th, with visitation at 9 a.m. followed by a service at the Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m., and a private burial for the family at the Westmount cemetery shortly following the service.  You may find his obituary in the Record for Friday and Saturday of this week. His involvement with you and his new found passion for the beautiful fish that will proudly remain as a reminder of him in our home, brought
more joy to his lie then you may know.  Your friendship with him will be forever remembered by us.

I ask a special request of you Dr. Marshall.  Could you please pass along this untimely and unfortunate news to the friends he had within your group.  I do not know who all to contact and would greatly appreciate your assistance with this.

On behalf of my mother Sharon, my brother Graeme, and myself I thank you once again for the joy you brought to my fathers life.

Sincerely,

Stacey Pautler

 Farewell Friend

We decided to dedicate a full page to Dale, just to let everybody know something more about this man. Apart from that, we also decided to include one of his E-mails addressed to George Reclos, some days before passing away. It is evident from this message that Dale really loved this hobby, something evident through his photos. Photos filled with feelings and love.

Hello George;

It was a pleasant surprise to hear from you through egroups. Sorry that I've been lagging behind in chatting with you.

First, let me say thanks for publishing my pud. nyererei pix on your site. I love the notoriety I get out of this. I 've also seen the setup of the Baenschi pix at fishbase and again thank you for putting them in touch with me. While talking about them you had mentioned that you will be getting a copy of their CD's when they come out in approx. October.

As you offered at one point to possibly copy them for me I'd definitely look forward to it if possible. Keep me informed of this and let me know what I can do to secure such from you. As per my egroup intro. you will note that I've secured wild caught Ps. Barlowi Mbenji and have them finished with the quarantine period and waiting for the first spawning.

They are clearly preparing to do this soon as the males are moving the gravel to entice the females. I've also bought a scanner finally so you can expect pix at some time soon. Don't worry I'm not ready to set up my own site any time in the near future. I'll send them to you to look at ,archive, or publish if you wish. I plan to try for a great spawning
sequence if possible such as I lucked in with the Baenschi. Glen Marshall and Tom Herman went crazy when these came in. I was the only one in the club who ordered them and they are the most vivid tangerine orange with blue in the fins. Neither them nor I have ever seen this vivid an orange in any cichlid. If you look at the new price list for
the CRLCA September order you'll see they've picked these as a recommended order. these wilds blow the heck out of the Barlowi we can pick up commercially over here.

Speaking of the Baenschi they slowed down in June and July in spawning but in the last 1-1/2 weeks the male has handled 3 of the 4 females who are all holding at this time.

On the topic of spawning I must say that your last month's article on "Raising the Fry" is a first class piece of reading. It's the best by far including talks I've listened to on fry and techniques to follow. Since it came out I've increased my feedings to 4-5 times a day and water changes to every 2 days at up to 50%. The increased spurt in growth is readily visible. Thanks for a great article and I look forward to more valuable insight articles on your site. Without a doubt your site is the most informative that I've been able to track down on the web. You people putting it together deserve all and any awards that are available for such terrific work. Please continue to find the time to continue to make your site the best on the web.

Finally, I was over to Tom Herman's in Guelph a couple of weeks ago and met a man "Peter" who had just come back from Greece and had met you. Sorry I've forgotten his last name. He said he was working up an article that you might use on your site about the differences of keeping cichlids in Greece vs North America. He very much enjoyed talking with you and your knowledge of the hobby. It is a small world.

I'd better go for now. Always look forward to hearing from you.

Regards

Dale

It fills my soul with grief to know that I am not going to hear from Dale any more. I would like to point your interest to some of his photos of Aulonocara baenschi and Pundamilia nyererei. I feel that Dale will always communicate with us through these photos.

On October 19th I received a message with the following paragraph from Stacey Pautler, Dale's daughter :

My family and I want to thank you for the excitement and honour that you
have gave my father with all your correspondence and the posting of his
fine examples of these species of fish, which I gladly take into my own
care.  He had expressed many a time a desire to someday meet you in
person.  We know he would want to wish you all the best in the future as
you continue on with the passion he shared in common with you.
