THORICHTHYS MEEKI

Photo of an adult male taken during the 25th AFC Meeting in Vichy, France (October 2004). Photo by John Reclos/MCH

THORICHTHYS MEEKI (Firemouth Cichlid)

This fish is a New World cichlid. A man has to admit what a man has to admit. I was attracted by this cichlid's photos showing the red colors of the breeding male. A really beautiful fish. However, I never saw these colors in my tanks. I had a pair and, suddenly the female died for no apparent reason. I acquired a big female to replace it but then the male was afraid of her. I went back and bought a smaller female similar in size. I must admit I was never successful with this particular species. I lost all four of them no matter how hard I tried. It seems that sometimes you just fail with a species even though this one is regarded as particularly hardy. Not kept anymore.

The bottom photo is a 12 month old firemouth, a "child" of Francesco's pair.
