SYNODONTIS ANGELICUS II

SYNODONTIS ANGELICUS

Synodontis angelicus (as well as Synodontis decorus) are really aggressive fish. Their aggression makes them ideal additions for any African Cichlid tank since they can defend themselves very well against the territorial behavior of the cichlids. However, those two species go far beyond than that. I have seen many times my Synodontis decorus chasing African cichlids all over the tank and it is always the cichlid which runs away. Synodontis angelicus, despite its relatively small size (about 14 cm) will chase all other Synodontis (much bigger than itself) while it will not hesitate to start serious fights with much bigger fish. In the photo above, you can see a 25 cm Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus (sailfin pleco) being chased by the Synodontis angelicus. This was not enough for the S. angelicus. It chased the pleco all over the tank until it was satisfied that it knew who the boss is. It will chase all cichlids from the caves even if it doesn't want to stay in them. In short, a beautiful but territorial and aggressive catfish.

Photos taken in May 2001.
