Anemonia sulcata
(Mediterranean snakelocks anemone)

The only known anemone species found in the Mediterranean Sea. It is symbiotic with Gobius buchichii (Anemone gobby).

Its tentacles sting caustically. In some places it is eaten when fried.

Photo was taken at a depth of about 15 meters in a typical Mediterranean reef near Syros island by G. Rigoutsos (hobbyist scuba diver, member of the Nautical Ecological and Cultural Association of Kini Bay - Spring 2001)
