Diodon holocanthus (spiny puffer)
Growing to 30 cm (11.8")
this fish needs a moderately large tank (284 liter / 75
gallons). It is aggressive against members of its own species
as well as other species. Should be fed meaty meals (fish,
squid, shrimp, mussels or krill). If there is no algae in the
tank, green stuff should be added. Ideally the fish should be
fed no less than 3 times per day. The fish is primarily
nocturnal and may hide all day until fully acclimatized. It is
a comical pet like fish by it may also bite hands - a painful
experience. You should not provoke inflating since it may take
air which is extremely difficult to be removed and may become
lethal. Netting it is also discouraged as it may inflate in
the net which makes removing it very difficult. Photo: Mike Iannibeli |
