Heros Severus (Severum)

This species is widely known by the name Severum and it comes in many color combinations. The species above is a wild caught specimen sized 15 cm. The fish s a New world cichlid and it does best in a 200 liter tank (minimum) with slightly acidic  water with a pH between 6.0-6.8 and a GH of 5-8. The aquascape should include plants, rocks and driftwood. While selecting the rocks add a flat rock which will can be used for spawning. The fish, in contrast to other New world cichlids is relatively peaceful and can be housed with other fish of the same size. It is a territorial fish and some problems may occur during spawning. This species doesn't form pairs easily so a choice of many females must be available to the male. May produce up to 1000 eggs which are laid on rocks. The fry is carefully taken care for by the parents. See next page for a photo of the albino morph.
