Today I witnessed the spawning of my second
P.socolofi female, the male obviously very happy about his!. It began
with the male digging in the sand at the back of the tank on an open
space,He began to court the female and was quite aggressive in doing so.
when the female was ready to spawn they both went to the pit where they
danced slowly in full circles the female following the male.at each full
circle the female laid 1 to 2 eggs and quickly picked them up then the
male flattened his anal fin so she would be attracted to it.this continued
on every full circle till an overly excited cat fish got in the way. The
female retracted and went for cover, the male obviously annoyed by the cat
fishes antics gave chase to any fish in sight, he then went back to the
pit to dig some more. This second female of mine is a lot smaller than the
one ready for releasing her fry,she spawned last month but kept the eggs
for only a week.a week before this spawning today she took on a very dark
colouration with almost black barring.my other female stayed a powder blue
colour all of the time.the larger female looks a lot like the male in
colour and size but the male has brighter more pronounced egg spots.
