The dominant male (left) and the subdominant one (right). Note the different placement of the black color in those two fishes. The same appears on the females - look at the photo of the tank below. Click on the images to see the high resolution pictures. Photos by G.J. Reclos /MCH

October 2004

Left: the adult male in my tank. Right: one of the juveniles that made it. No matter what, the overall population of the tank remains constant. The initial pairs have died a year ago (they were acquired 3 years ago) and their fry have taken their place. Click on the images for the high resolution pictures. Photos by G.J.Reclos/MCH

A tank which was empty was easily transformed into a pleasing little biotope with just some plant cutting (donated by Greek hobbyists) a piece of vine wood and a mixture of gravel and sand (actually a left over in an old bag). Five Xiphophorus variatus (the Tuxedo platy form) were added along with a brown pleco (LDA 016). The males grow up to  5 cm while the females become somethwat larger (7.5 cm).  The dense plant formation on the surface (a mixture of Ceratophyllum demersum and floating Riccia fluitans (thanks to Christopher) may be enough to ensure a high survival rate for the fry (as optimistic as ever). In short, it doesn't take a fortune to create something beautiful. The overall cost of this tank is about 130 $ - livestock and equipment included. Tank size : 45 liters (12 gallons).
