This
peaceful Malawi cichlid, closely resembling Placidochromis
electra is a welcomed addition to an Utaka and Aulonocara commmunity
tank. In the lake it normally feeds on small invertebrates that are
digged up by large sand dwelling fish like Taeniolethronops
praeorbitalis. Protomelas phenochilus will rush from cloud to cloud
hoping to grab some food, a behavior which will be shown in the
aquarium too: they will be attracted when you stir up the bottom. In
the aquarium it will accept almost any food that is presented. With
an adult length of 17cm this fish needs at least a 250L and a
minimum tank length of 150cm. there are different locations where
Placidochromis phenochilus can be found in the lake. The Tanzania
morph that i keep gets silver spots on the body at an age of 1.5
years. My mid sized males already show some silver spots.
