Introduction by the owner :
It was back then in 1985 when
I built my first small tank (10x2x5 cm) with a sole neon tetra which soon
passed away. Fourteen years later I started something bigger : an aquarium
shop, Abyss. During those years I tried to make my hobby a way of life.
This was done with much reading and practical exercise. It all started in
my father’s shop – a petshop which, among other animals, had some
aquariums. At the very beginning it was only goldfish bowls but in the end
it was reef aquariums. Being raised in this environment I learned to
appreciate and respect any form of life – you have to realize that,
especially if this is going to be the way to earn a living. However, the
life form that attracted me most was the fish. Although this was the part
with the least information and availability of supporting equipment they
immediately got my attention. Unfortunately, during the last years not
many things have changed.. Yes, there are new technologies, the fish are
now correctly classified, there have been some improvements here and
there, but the people in this hobby have largely remain the same.. (at
least in Greece).
Comments by MCH:
It is true that Abyss
offers its customers fish of good quality, a moderate to good selection of
species, correct information and very good prices. Stavros is ready to
answer your questions and it is better to follow his advice. I have
witnessed many customers who just ignore his suggestions and carry on
with their own plans - sometimes leading to unhappy endings. Even if
something is not readily available he will do his best to find it the
soonest possible. An online "new arrival" webpage as well as an e-mail
notification to whoever is interested is also a great plus. All in all,
one of the very few places in Athens where you can do your shopping, ask
your questions and take some sensible advice. Highly recommended.

This is called the "spend your money" corner !

Tsipas' fish shop was recently redecorated and now reflects its
owner's sight and vision on how such a shop should look like. A
clean and pleasant look is what clearly distinguishes this shop.
Another thing that makes this place different is that it is only
about fish. Among them, cichlids have a very good share
occupying more than 50% of his fresh water tanks (at least in water volume)
while there is also a good selection of marine fish and
invertebrates. A reef display tank with a water volume of almost
2000 liters will soon be available on the first floor, facing the
entrance - however we will cover this in full detail. Photos are
already taken during the construction stage.. so stay tuned ! |
