The professionals - "HYDROCOSMOS"

HYDROKOSMOS is run by Andreas Kamarinos. The petshop is located at 117-119 Galatsiou Ave., Galatsi. Tel: +30 210 2136616 e-mail: info@hydrocosmos.gr website: www.hydrocosmos.gr

"The aquarium hobby is the most popular of the hobbies dealing with living creatures and that is why it deserves a better confrontation especially by professionals." Andreas Kamarinos

All other things being equal, the availability of parking place makes it "the" place to visit.

Starting with lamps, heaters, air pumps, filters ..

... till foods and medications you will find an impressive range of products.

Andreas shows us the impressive central filtration system.

Two hundred and fifty tanks is always an impressive number - and an impressive sight we will add. The tanks are "isolated" in a glass room with a controlled environment. Ranging from 60 to 500 liters they will become the home of a wide range of fish. Tanks are organized in "clusters" which share common water parameters and filtration.

The entrance (while still not completed). You can see the decoration goodies and - at the left side - the glass room which houses the tanks.

The side of the fish room. Elegance, simplicity and aesthetics.

This is a tour in the new Hydrocosmos. It is probably the largest and definitely the best organized petshop in Athens at this moment. A huge investment with a lot of love for aquatic life. The project calls for two hundred and fifty tanks filled with "ordinary" as well as "rare" species, plants, decoration material, foods, just name it. At the moment only part of the tanks are operational since Andreas is slowly preparing each cluster to ensure a happy environment for his fish. All this is supported by Andreas who definitely knows what he is talking about.

A view of HydroKosmos, Andreas' shop. Andreas is one of the very few professionals with a wide experience and an in-depth knowledge of the hobby. Somewhere between a hobbyist and a professional, Andreas is a true asset for the Greek hobbyist.

Andreas really loves catfishes. This is evident in his tanks. Many species are found there ranging from the ordinary to the truly rare. Here an Arius jordani swims over a Synodontis angelicus

Melanotaenia is one species that makes Andreas proud. He has kept them for years and is now really happy with his fully grown, fully grown samples in his main display tank. Front: Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi

A short introduction by Andreas: I have been professionally working on the field of aquariums for the last 14 years but my first contact with fish keeping started before my professional preoccupation. I started   with a small tank with guppies but only when I came across a panaque suttoni (or panaque suttonorum which is its recent   compellation, or blue eyes) did I realize that there are rare species and that having an aquarium is not just a tank filled with water. Furthermore, the problems that I faced with my own aquariums urged me to resort to bibliography and magazines about fish and aquariums in general. Later, another pleco (panaque nigrolineatus or royal pleco) and my effort to find it led me to the beginning of my professional career (as a «professional hobbyist»). Since then, plecos in general are still my favorite species and I have seen most of these beautiful creatures that exist in the aquarium hobby.

Andreas has separated his activities in two, clearly defined sections: the Professional part which means setting up and maintaining aquariums for decorative purposes (hotels, offices and homes) and the Hobbyist part which means supplying the Greek hobbyist with first class fish and information. A small sample of his professional work is shown in next page.

You can find more about Andreas' activities in his truly professional website at www.hydrocosmos.gr - as this site takes its final shape it will become a realy "meeting point" for all Greek aquarists seeking correct information.
